Our Family History

My name is Malsor, meaning man of the mountains in Albanian. When the Kosovo war (1998-1999) happened, my mom was seven-month pregnant with me and I was born in the mountains during the war. My family came from the Drenica Valley in Central Kosovo where the war started. During fifteen months, our village as well as many others endured heavy bombing and massacres. Both of my grandfathers and one of my uncles were killed. After the war, my father decided to go to college to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master’s degree in geography while my mother studied law, commuting daily from the village. These were tough times not only for us, but for almost every family in Kosovo trying to rebuild. There were few job opportunities and my father decided to move to the capital city. They studied very hard to finish their degrees and then took out a big loan for me to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology. I graduated in 2021, and, the following year, our family decided to open a hostel in Pristina. Since then, we have been welcoming guests from all over the world. We feel honored to host you in our family home in old Pristina and look forward to sharing our beloved country with you during your stay. – Malsor Bunjaku, GOT Hostel Owner.

Our tours

City tour

Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, is famous for history, art, and culture. This guided walking tour begins in Old Town, ten minutes’ walk from our Hostel. We visit the Great Hamman, Carshi Mosque, Old Bazaar, Clock Tower, Ethnographic Museum, and Kosovo Museum. From there, we stroll along the Mother Teresa Boulevard, passing through the Parliament, National Theatre, Grand Hotel, National Library, Mother Teresa Cathedral, Orthodox Church, Skanderbeg Statue, the Newborn Monument, and Palace of Youth and Sports. We end the tour by enjoying a delicious traditional lunch at a local restaurant in Old Town.

Village tour

Drenica is a beautiful hilly region in central Kosovo known for its tradition of strong resistance to outside powers. This guided walking tour begins in the ancestral village of the Bunjaku family of the GOT Hostel, crossing orchards and farmland as well as an old mill destroyed during the Kosovo War. We visit the local village school, continue to the memorial site of the KLA commandant killed during the Kosovo War, and see the nickel mine in the area. We end the tour by enjoying a delicious traditional lunch with a local family from the Drenica Valley before visiting the town of Drensa.

History tour

These historical day tours highlight the political history of Kosovo and take the visitor through the killing fields of the Kosovo War in Prekaz/Gllogjan/Shala e Bajgores/Llapi Valley/Berisha Mountains/Neradime Mountains. We visit the war frontlines, memorials, and cemeteries. We will stop for lunch at a traditional restaurant in the area. You will have the opportunity to meet with locals about their war experiences and enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine prepared by a local family or restaurant.

Nature tour

The beautiful Rugova Canyon is a river canyon near Peja in Western Kosovo within the Accursed Mountains National Park. With a length of 25 km and a depth up to 1,000 meters, Rugova is considered to be one of Europe’s longest and deepest canyons. This guided hiking tour begins in the Rugova Canyon in Peja, going through small mountain villages with panoramic views from mountain tops. We will stop for lunch at a traditional restaurant in the Rugova Canyon and end the tour by visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Serbian Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Pec.

Kosovo country tour

Kosovo is a diverse country with beautiful culture and nature. This tour begins in the capital city of Pristina. We visit the Old Town and city centre around Mother Teresa Boulevard. We then head North to the divided city of Mitrovica (Serbian in the North and Albanian in the South). From there, we go West towards Peja and visit the Old Bazaar. The visitor will have an opportunity to hike in the beautiful Rugova Canyon in the Accursed Mountains National Park, going through small villages with panoramic views from mountain tops. We then drive South to old Gjakova and visit the oldest Ottoman bazaar in Kosovo. Prizren, the former capital city with rich history and culture, is our last stop before returning to Pristina.

Archaeological tour

Kosovo is an old country with many rich archaeological sites from Dardanian, Roman, and medieval periods. This tour begins in the National Museum of Kosovo in Pristina and continues to nearby Ulpiana, an ancient Roman city. A few kilometres from the Pristina International Airport lies the Harilaq Fortress built in 4th–6th century AD in Dardania by Byzantine emperor, Justinian the Great. This castle, with its rampart and interior architectural objects, has no analogy with other castles in the central Balkans. Our last stop is the famous Gadime Cave in Novo Brdo, about twenty kilometres from Pristina. In this archaelogical tour, the visitor will have an opportunity to explore old ruins, ancient fortresses, and natural caves in Kosovo.
